Sweet Blessings

Finally, the last cake from my four-cake weekend! It was a 4-tier baptism cake for the cutest little girl. Her mom contacted me with a few ideas, she wanted to keep it fairly simple. She sent me a picture of a cake with stripes, a bow, and of course, a cross on top. The colour is actually a beautiful lilac, but for some reason, it came out more blueish in the pictures. My walls are purplish, so I don't know if that explains it...

And that wraps up my crazy weekend! On to the next! :)

Happy Parents' Day!

Last Sunday was father's day, and I got an interesting order. A friend of mine was out of town for mother's day, so she wanted to get a combined Mother's Day/Father's Day cake and celebrate them both together. So, we got chatting about what her parents like, and a few interesting things came up. They love puzzles, hiking, and in particular hiking in their favourite forest in New England. Put it all together, and we came up with two puzzle piece shaped cakes, with a hand-painted forest scene. And finally, topped off with a figurine of each of them. The cake was a chocolate cake with an amaretto cream cheese frosting. So good!

Second Time's the Charm!

A few weeks ago, I made a pretty big mistake, I made an entire engagement cake for the wrong date! Well, it wasn't just some random date mix-up. The event was originally supposed to be on June 2, and that's the date I put down in my calendar. The client then sent me a Facebook message, saying they changed the date to two weeks later. I'm not sure if the message just got lost in the mess of Facebook messages we sent back and forth, or if I simply forgot to change the date... whatever it was, I made the cake, sent her a message saying it was ready for pick up. I then got a message back saying that the cake isn't for another two weeks! I was so embarrassed. And upset! I had just put hours into a cake that wasn't going to be used!

Not true... I posted a picture of it online, and within a few hours, I had an offer from someone to buy it for his wife's birthday that night. Yay! I wouldn't have to eat two tiers of cake by myself! ;) So I added a flower on top, with a message to his wife, and voila! No one needs to know it was originally for an engagement party... :)

And then, two weeks later, I remade the exact cake... along with those 3 other cake orders from that weekend!

It all worked out in the end, but it was still a very embarrassing moment. I've learned my lesson. From now on, no more of these back and forth emails and Facebook messages. I've made myself a form that the clients fill out. All the info in one place. No more mix-ups! :D

Phew! ... I mean, Pooh!

This past weekend was quite possibly one of the most intense weekends, both in terms of caking, and in all other fun things weekends bring about. I think I have the inability to say no... and so, I had four cake orders this weekend. Yes, on top of my full time job, and my weekend job, four cakes. Needless to say, I'm pretty sleep deprived! But I don't think I could be more satisfied with how it all turned out.

I don't have the patience to post all four cakes in one shot, so they're going to have to come one at a time. First up, a simple Winnie the Pooh cake.

I think four is my limit! There are only so many shelves in my fridge!

If the Shoe Fits, Eat It!

This weekend I got an order for my first shoe cake. I had so much fun making it! The birthday girl, a fashion blogger and style enthusiast, was super easy to work with. She made me this Pinterest board to give me an idea of the Valentino shoes she wanted me to base it on. I especially loved making the lace, all hand painted of course!

I had no idea how I was going to make that floaty lace stuff from this shoe, so a little experimentation was in store. I used the same lace, formed it into some loops and twists, and tada!  In the end, I think it worked out great!

I was also asked to include her name on the box instead of Valentino, surrounded by some gold Valentino studs.

Check out what she thought of my cake here.
