Cake of the Living Dead

I cannot describe how excited I was about this cake order. For those of you that don't already know this, I'm a huge fan of zombies! Man if there was a zombie attack, I'd be the first one out there with my uzi and chainsaw! Muahaha! From zombie movies, to killing them in the game Left4Dead with my boyfriend, to dressing ourselves up as the undead and scaring kids on our lawn on Halloween... Gosh, I love those ugly things!

So, needless to say, when I was asked to make a creepy zombie head, something similar to one from The Walking Dead, I couldn't contain myself! I swear the pictures don't do this guy justice, but here's what I came up with.

Once again, gotta love my amazingly talented boyfriend for helping me carve the head! I guess after doing our zombie makeup each year, I already had a bit of experience under my belt on how to make this guy's bloody wounds and scars... and veins!

I also put a few bloody fingerprints on the bloody message.

Tadam! I think I killed it ;)

The Taste of Music

A couple of my most awesome customers had a second daughter last year. That means they get to order two cakes from me each year! How lucky! ;) So for the little one's first birthday, they sent me pictures of her favorite toys -- a set of musical instruments -- and asked me to replicate them on the cake. Sounds good!

So I made them all out of fondant, fully edible for the little ones.  On top, I put her favorite one (and mine!), the xylophone. The other instruments decorated the sides of the cake, along with a bunch of bright music notes.

They like to have two separate parties for family and friends, so they keep the top tier for the next day's party. Instead of actually stacking and gluing the two tiers together, I built each cake separately on its own board and no royal icing between the layers, for easy disassembly :)

Simple But Sweet

Last week I was asked to make a simply sweet cake for a lovely lady's birthday.  She wanted it to have a bit of bling, a touch of class, and a beautiful flower to top it off. I started off by making this magnificent magnolia. I love this flower!

And then made a black and pink criss-crossed ribbon with bling! And I obviously had to airbrush a bit of sparkle all over!

Finally, a little message on top...

Et voila!
