Graduation Cap Cake

You know summer's officially here when school's out. Even though I haven't been in school for a few years now, I still base my summer around the school year. Back to school commercials still give me a sinking feeling when watching my sunday morning cartoons! I guess I'll always be a child at heart! ;)

A few weeks ago, I made my niece's daycare graduation cake based on Dr. Seuss's "Oh! The Places You'll Go!" This weekend, I was asked to make a cake for a slightly older crowd. High school!

Congrats, class of 2013!

Touchdown!

One of my latest cakes was for a super sports fan's birthday. His girlfriend had gotten him a Marques Colston New Orleans Saints jersey for his birthday, and wanted a cake to go along with the present. So for the topper, I made the football player as a sugar figurine. Around the four sides of the cake, she asked me to include other teams he's a fan of. Detroit Red Wings in hockey, Detroit Tigers in baseball, New York Knicks in basketball, and of course the Saints right in the front.

Oh The Places You'll Go!

It's graduation season! It's always very exciting to move on to bigger and better things. My little niece is starting kindergarten in the fall, so she had her daycare graduation last week. This has to be the cutest grad I have ever attended! It was complete with little ones stumbling across stage, amazing performances, teeny graduation hats, and a proud parents paparazzi crowding around the stage with a million cameras. It was all quite the sight!

As a little present to my niece, I made her a graduation cake. I based it on the Dr. Seuss book, Oh The Places You'll Go! I've been dying to make any Dr. Seuss themed cake, and this book is just so terrific, and a classic for graduations.

Sporty Cake

A very confused mother approached me a few weeks ago, with no clue as to what kind of birthday cake to get for her 18-year-old son. After much brainstorming and many rejected suggestions, I was at a loss for the first time! I asked about everything from hobbies to color schemes, and got nada. Guys are always tougher, I guess... I finally found out that he's actually quite the sporty guy and plays both basketball and soccer. Birthday boy's brother came up with this design, and thank goodness for him, it all worked out in the end!

Bold and Gold

I made this cake a few weeks ago for a woman's 50th birthday. I was given a color swatch for her outfit for the night and was asked to match it. Since the color was so bold, I decided to keep the rest of the decor fairly simple, topped off with a golden flower!

Then Comes Baby in a Baby Carriage!

This weekend I had the pleasure of making a baby shower cake for a beautiful momma-to-be. The cake features a tiny sugar replica of her, along with a delicate little baby carriage. I decided to keep the rest of the design simple - pink with a little touch of ruffles - very appropriate for a baby girl! The inside is red velvet and cream cheese frosting, a super popular flavour lately here at Periwinkle!

Goodies to Save the Boobies

A little while ago, I was approached by a couple of girls who are raising money for the Weekend to End Women's Cancer Foundation. They'll be taking part in the two day, 60km walk at the end of August, and wanted to know if I'd be able to help. They were holding a bake sale at Dawson College and wanted me to donate some treats. I made them 50 cake pops and 50 cupcakes, all decorated with some pink fondant ribbons. I'm especially in love with the ombre cupcakes!
